This week, I find myself slowly falling behind on all my to-do lists. My usual jig is to ignore anything that has to do with self-care with the sad excuse of "I don't have time. There's so much shit to do!" (Actual words that have been spilling out of my mouth lately). But! Someone recently pointed out to me - you will always have shit to do. Oh yes, the list will always be there. The key is p r i o r i t i z i n g. Say it with me now...Prioritizing! It is a skill I have yet to master, but I've put it on that damn list of things to do.
So, you might ask...what is on your list of priorities? I have three things I'd like to do in the name of self-care...
Learn. I've been out of school for years, but I'm a big learner - NYC is quite possibly the best place to live if you've got a curious spirit. I find myself constantly signing up for classes and googling events around the city that can give this brain the stimulation it deserves. Shut off that reality television and stop staring at facebook....get out there and learn something!
Breathe. Yes, it may seem basic. But do you remember the last time you consciously took a big and deep breath? I don't, and it both saddens and frightens me. Ps. They have an amazing space and even more amazing yoga teachers there.
Cook. There is a quote that has stuck with me for awhile: "I've never thought it made sense to leave such a crucial thing, the ability to nourish one's self, in the hands of others." It's from a Ted Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on why we should all be feminists. Feminist? Yes. Able to cook for one's self? Kind of. I've decided that Sunday shall be my day of cooking from now on, no matter how basic.
